The Plastic Packaging Tax will encourage us all to make more sustainable choices

We have a product range that makes those choices easier

The Plastic Packaging Tax is coming

The UK Plastic Packaging Tax came into force on 1st April 2022. The tax will be applied at £200 per tonne on plastic packaging that does not contain a minimum of 30% recycled content.

Aimed at manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging, the plastic tax will filter through the supply chain, and encourage us all to make more sustainable choices when it comes to packaging. Macfarlane Packaging can help you prepare…

Recycled plastic and alternative materials

We have a huge range of plastic packaging that contains at least 30% recycled content. Innovative protective packaging that uses alternative materials is also available. We offer a wide range of board and paper products that eliminate the need for plastic in many applications (including a transparent paper document wallet).

Making us all more sustainable

The plastic tax is being applied in a bid to increase the demand for recycled plastic, which in turn will drive the increased recycling of plastic material. It is also intended to push growth and development in the UK recycling industry. The tax creates the type of positive pressure we all need to make more sustainable choices. And the right choices will significantly reduce how packaging contributes to your overall business costs.

Some of our most popular products that don’t attract the plastic tax

    Recycled content plastic products

Bubble wrap with 30% recycled content

We stock 30% recycled content bubble wrap as standard. AirCap® bubble is manufactured using a thinner co-extruded film, which guarantees a superior and longer lasting protection using less plastic material.

Stretch film with 30% recycled content

Hand-applied stretch film is great for securing pallets. Macfarlane Packaging can offer Heavy, Super Heavy and Extra Heavy blown hand films that contain 30% recycled content.

Air pillows with 50% recycled content

AirSpeed® Renew air cushions are made from 50% post-consumer recycled content. Using recycled content in the manufacturing process means less waste goes to landfill and contributes to a circular economy.

    Strapping with 100% recycled content

Macfarlane strapping is ideal for bundling products together or strapping pallets. Available in medium, heavy or super heavy duty and can be used with a designated stand.

    Alternatives to plastic products

    Protective honeycomb paper

Geami WrapPak® is the combination of a die cut Kraft paper with a tissue interleaf paper. The Geami WrapPak® HV converter expands the die cut paper to a 3D honeycomb structure providing a unique wrapping product.

    Mailers with paper padding

Padded paper mailers are a great environmentally-friendly postal packaging solution. Made from 100% recycled paper and kerbside recyclable, they have an easy peel and stick seal for quick dispatch.

    Paper tape

Switching to paper tape is an easy way to reduce or eliminate plastic in your supply chain. It’s 100% recyclable and made from a renewable resource. It’s extra durable too, so you may be able to use less tape than you were before, cutting even more material out of your packing process.

    Thermal packaging with paper liners

Our RecycoolMe shippers are 100% curbside recyclable. Made from recycled Kraft paper, the packs include an outer box with TempGuardTM liners that will keep products below -5°C or between 2°C – 8°C for up to 48 hours, when used with a coolant.
